About Columbus
Columbus was laid out in 1812 and incorporated in 1816. As the capital city of Ohio, it became a center of learning and social activities. The city has a diverse economy based on education, government, insurance, banking, defense, aviation, food, clothes, logistics, medical research, health care, retail, technology and much more. It has been referred to as “recession proof”.
Columbus is home to The Ohio State University, one of the largest universities in the country, and Capital University. The city has the headquarters of major corporations and has been ranked a top ten city by Relocate America. It is also home to the OSU Buckeye football team and the Bluejackets hockey team.
There are endless opportunities for sightseeing and learning — enjoy the art, history and science museums, cultural arts centers, theaters and concerts. Numerous parks offer outdoor activities, including bike paths along the Olentangy and Scioto Rivers. The world-renowned Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is minutes away.
Two of the historic neighborhoods within the city are Bexley and German Village. German Village was settled in 1814 and primarily developed after 1840. Historic homes, shops and restaurants are favorite sites for visitors and residents alike. Bexley is known for its close-knit neighborhoods, highly ranked school system, including private schools and classic main street environment. In the 1800s, country homes and urban estates were constructed east of Alum Creek along Broad Street.
Established in 1845, Columbus City Schools is Ohio’s largest school district with more than 50,000 students in 109 schools. The “heart of Ohio”, it is located in the center of the state.
