Powell was named “Middlebury” by the first settlers who arrived around 1801 from Middlebury, Connecticut. It was later renamed “Powell” after Judge Thomas Powell who established the first post office. Powell is noted for its historic business district which includes several antique shops and a mixture of old and new businesses.
Citizens pride themselves on the small town, friendly atmosphere. Local activities abound, with festivals, fireworks, a Children’s Concert and much more. Also, the more than 200 parks and recreation camps offer miles of bike trails and programs for everyone. Powell is home to the highly-rated Olentangy School District. Schools in Powell have received nine out ten in the Great Schools ratings.
Nearby are the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and its water park Zoombezi Bay, and the historic Olentangy Indian Caverns. Upscale housing communities offer almost unlimited options. It is ideally situated minutes from I-270 and 25 minutes from downtown Columbus.
